Interview with hitamata, the Winner from Indonesia

Today we are going to present you another interview by Visualchemist. This time we’ve asked her to interview Idu Fitrano (BootB Creator hitamata) - a designer from Indonesia who won “CREOM Cosmetics: Brand re-styling” Pitch by CREOM.

Visualchemist: Hi there, Idu!
Idu Fitrano: Hi Catherine, nice to know you.

Congratulations. Looks like you had the winning solution for the CREOM project! Well done.
:) Thanks and congrats for your winning solution for the BootB Blog project. Great solution!

Tell me (and the BootB community) a little bit about yourself.
A little about me… I was born and live in Jakarta, Indonesia. After I finished my visual communication studies, I worked at Adentity Advertising as an art director. Last year, I quit my job and built my own graphic studio called Geurobagideu. Now our little studio has two creative sections – a visual communication service & graphical products section. We are in the middle of creating our newest products.

Well congratulations, too, on owning your own studio. Geurobagideu, that’s an interesting name. What does it mean and how did you come up with it?
Thank you. Basically, Geurobagideu is just a combination of two words Geurobak and Ide. Gerobak in Indonesia means cart, and Ide means idea. I changed the “E” to “EU” to make it more unique, similar to the pronunciation of one Indonesian ethnicy, Sundanese. Geurobagideu comes up because people in my country still use carts to sell things. So, I sell my ideas in my studio, which also means “my cart.”

What are your creative hobbies and things you do for fun?
I love playing PS3 games especially Winning Eleven with my friends. Creating motivation posters is my favorite hobby.

Who is your favorite artist and do you have a favorite medium?
My favorite designer is Hermawan Tanzil (founder of LeBoYe Design) and my favorite medium is print media.

What is it like to be a designer in Indonesia?
Interesting, fun, challenging and also a heartbreaker, too, because Indonesia is created by so many cultures, ethnicities and languages. It gives me plenty of room to explore a wide range of creativity but up to this point, none of my work is fully Indonesia.

Describe your work environment/office.
I am an end-result oriented person. By this, I mean everyone is free to do whatever they want, whenever they want, as long as the work is done.

What image is currently on your computer desktop?
I have the PS3 logo on my desktop. I hope I get a project to redesign it someday :)

How would you describe your style of design or art direction?
Simple and clear.

If you were a typeface, what typeface would you be and why?
If I were a typeface I would be Rockwell because it looks ordinary. Actually, it is kind of dull, but if put in the right layout, it can be interesting.

You like to create motivation posters as a hobby? Interesting. What do you do with your posters once they are completed?
Other than collecting it as my personal interest, I sometimes use it as an idea reference for my new client projects.

What motivates you and keeps your creative?
A successful project, overcoming obstacles, obtaining goals and satisfied client faces always motivate me.

Describe a typical day in the Geurobagideu office.
Hmm… Typically, I try to wake up early and have a cup of good coffee, go to my studio, start work to earn a living or fulfill a passion. After all that, I usually go home, eat and sleep. Sounds boring? Then you should ask what my non-typical day is like.

How is it like running your own design studio, as opposed to working for an agency?
I think the right phrase to describe how it is like running my own studio is “you eat what you kill.” It means that I have bigger responsibilities, challenges and targets to be fulfilled, but otherwise, I also like the freedom to choose my targets (clients, etc). I can’t get those freedoms by being a worker.

Thank you so much for your time, Idu!
Thank you. Best regards.
